The Drive Out Cinema - Furniture Drags

Dragged Scottish furniture +
DVD Loop + Audio

2006

Primary content is about Migration, displacement, destruction, loss and the turbulence caused by aspects of relocation; whether enforced or chosen. Vital to the work is the notion of forward movement.

The 'sculpted' objects are created via the driving process of their Carrier filming vehicle.

Familiar and more unique items of domestic scottish furniture are dragged and torn apart. The full process of the objects undergoing their stresses is caught on the Drive Out Cinema (Scotland) film.

Shot and produced at night, off the west coast of Scotland on the Isle of Bute with permission of the Crichton Stuart family (direct living descendents of the Royal Stuart Family, once themselves politically and historically displaced). The chosen objects created in the drag process are illuminated as they are damaged and broken apart through forward movement.

The drag objects formalise themes of migration and loss as well as display the texture and result of physical trauma.

We witness various items of familiar domestic furniture - large and small; Beds, fridges, chairs, televisions, cookers, washing machines, kitchen furniture, pianos, ping pong tables, couches, vacuums, babies prams, bar stools, architectural drafting tables, bedroom drawers scrawled with intimate personal messages, desks, computers; all items cherished previously in peoples lives - dragged, destroyed - now fixed on display - they reveal the intimate story of their lived experience.

We cannot help but see this wreckage anthroporphically. As extensions of ourselves - these familiar objects question how the process and motives of movement impact upon human relationships and material possessions.

Roads themselves are used in line with the combustion engine to supply the key tools that create the surfaces and final forms of the objects.

Poetic and sensitive yet overshadowed by violent process - one is left with series of fragmented familiar items that deposit a sense of loss.
The finalised dragged objects provide a direct physicality to the very experience of emotional transit or migration.

Through using different styles, design periods and material values of goods to be dragged; the project is able to connect to people of different ages, socio economic groups and backgrounds.

The presence of earth, soil and land is left all over the concluded works - connecting objects we associate with interiority and domesticity with much more external processes and linking us to an exposure beyond the boundaries of blissful comfort.

The anxiety and feeling of transit is immediately evident. The wreckage requests investigation and understanding.

Constant to each Drive Out Cinema film - exhibited with the correlating objects - is the deep bellowing drone of the engine and the scraping sound of the destructive process endured and undergone by the furniture. The sound partly explains the situation.

The destruction of our most familiar objects from our built domestic environments presents a psyhcological landscape to ponder as well as alludes to a sybolic ecological reality - especially when our sense of place and environment is also perceived as being destroyed by velocity and the ubiquitity of the combustion engine.
