Unique: everything in this work was designed and fabricated by hand
Conceived
as a multi-purpose highly functional ‘migratory’ art
work to play all formats of media. To recycle and restore a perfectly
usable machine for greater longevity and extended use. They do not support
the
purchase of new vehicles but the adaptation of previously existing systems.
In the process of restoration and manufacture one becomes familiar and
competent and aligned with the machine. Being able to fix things oneself
is a large part of the experience of the project.
The carrier
is a parallel form of engineering, mirroring the normal world but further
extending use and meaning. The form of the work is migratory
in its very design, fusing the old and the new. Maximising the design,
energy potential and space of the vehicle for varied purposes and projects.
Its intention is to be a highly pragmatic and usable as well as show
influences from Australian car, DIY and camping culture. The vehicle
is an integral
part of Migratory Projects as it is designed in connection to the Trailer
Garden and Sauna works.
Primary
to this work is the use of the combustion engine ( Original vehicle
chosen for its year of manufacture and because of its ‘high end’ engine – Cleveland
V8 5.6 litre, petrol and LPG). A machine that consumes, burns and eventually
exhausts – symbolically and ecologically a connection can be
drawn between the furniture drags and the continuing destruction
of our environment.
The engine in all forms is also what moves goods and people around
the world, Automotive, ship and aeroplane.
The Carrier
supports and provides the power for the Drive Out Cinema
/ Furniture drag projects ( Australia / Denmark / UK) – in
that it drags, pulls and sculpts the domestic items of furniture chosen
for the
films. It also provides lighting and power for the shooting of
the films and documenting of the process. The vehicle has also been
used to cook,
using the engine (Road Trip Dinners) and to travel with the Trailer
Garden in a number of road tests and explorations into the landscape.
The work
also screens films from the adapted roof projection unit, movies are
projected onto a fitted rear screen on the Bull bar
or straight onto
the sides the buildings. Location depending. The work intensifies
and compacts many ideas into one form. Green engineering, dymaxion
design,
micro architecture,
shelter, travel, self sufficiency, work space, film unit, tool,
resource centre. The project having now occurred in three different
countries
has involved road trips, social events, screenings, audio plays,
and three
international versions of the Drive Out Cinema & Furniture
Drags ( AUST/ DK/ SCOT)
The works
are by intention duplicitous, offering and displaying the notion of
escape and interaction. Highly functional and supportive
yet ultimately
destructive.
